Visa Process in Australia

It can be challenging to navigate the visa application procedure for Australia. There are multiple visas available and various application options based on your situation and nationality. According to the Department of Home Affairs, applicants should apply for a visa as early as four months before their departure date. However, visa processing timeframes vary depending on various criteria, and your visa document may be processed in even less time. Even so, it's best to apply as soon as feasible.

The Post-study work-stream visa:

This is the most well-known and flexible work visa for most students, and it falls under the visa subclass 485. After completing their course, students can apply for this visa right away. Bachelor’s, master’s (coursework and research), and doctoral students are eligible for this visa category. Students can work in any profession or job and have multiple entrance rights into and out of Australia under this arrangement. It provides the most opportunities to work in the country once you graduate. Those seeking a standalone diploma or trade qualification are not eligible for this visa category. Bachelor students studying in major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane can work for two years, master’ students for three years, and Doctoral students for four years under this category. Students studying in other cities, regional centres, or locations, such as Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, to mention a few (a fuller list can be found on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website), may be eligible to extend their work-study visa by up to six months under new restrictions. Students studying in other cities, regional centres, or areas, such as Adelaide, Perth, and Canberra, to name a few (a more detailed list can be found on the Australian Department of Home Affairs website), will be able to extend their work-study visa for up to two years based on their location and course of study, under new regulations. This is a significant benefit for thousands of kids.

The Graduate Work-Stream visa:

This work visa, which falls under subclass 485, is for graduates with skills and qualifications relevant to certain occupations that Australia requires. Graduates can work for 18 months under this category, which has been temporarily extended to 24 months for visas issued after December 1, 2021. This visa category has the restriction that the holder can only work in the designated skill area. There is no way to extend the visa unless the employer sponsors the extension or the holder applies for another relevant visa category.

Skilled Recognized Graduate visa:

This visa is for engineering graduates from specifically qualified universities and falls under the visa category 476. The pupil must be under 31 years of age to be eligible for this category. Holders of this visa can work in Australia for 18 months before applying for another visa or being sponsored by their employers under a different visa class to stay longer. Overall, holders of the post-study work stream visa have the most freedom, as they can work in any sector to support themselves and create a career.

Process of Visa Application:

There are two ways to apply for an Australian visa:

1. Fill out an online application.

2. A paper application is required.

Since Australia discontinued printing visa labels on passports in 2015, all visa data are accessible through the VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) service. Nowadays, an internet application is more practical for saving all your data and examining it. Some nations (or visa categories) may not be eligible for the online application, in which case a paper application must be submitted through an embassy. When applying for a visa, there are specific requirements you must follow for each type of application.

Online Application Process:

Create an Account on the Internet

If you apply for an Australian visa, the first step is to create an individual online account on the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ official website (ImmiAccount). You can establish an account for free by entering your personal information, creating a password, and confirming your account via email.

Choose a Visa Type

There are various sorts of Australian visas from which to pick. These will largely depend on your purpose for visiting; you can apply for a tourist visa, a student visa, a work visa, etc.

Fill out the Australian Visa Application Form.

There is a different application form for each type of visa. After choosing a visa type, you can continue filling out the form. You must fill out the form with your personal information (name, birth date, marital status, etc.), the reason for your visit to Australia, the length of your stay, and so on.

Please upload the required documents.

This is how you attach papers to the online application:

  • Select “attach a document” from the drop-down menu.
  • Choose to who you want to send the document.
  • Determine why you’re submitting this document.
  • Choose the documents to be uploaded.
  • Give the file a name.
  • Click the attach button.

There is a separate section for attaching images; all you have to do is choose “attach a passport photo” as your first choice when uploading photos. The documents needed for an Australian visa vary depending on the type of visa, but the basics include a passport, identification photos, travel insurance, financial statements, etc. Make sure your papers are colour copies that have been scanned.

The Application Fee must be paid.

The cost of a visa to Australia varies based on the type of visa. You must, however, pay the application fee before submitting your application; otherwise, it will not be processed. You can pay the charge in various ways using the online application. For example, you can use a credit card, a debit card, or PayPal to pay.

Fill out and apply.

You can now submit your application after completing these steps. If something has changed, you can use the ImmiAccount to contact the Australian authorities. For example, if your address changes, you can use the account to notify the Department of Foreign Affairs. You can track the visa application process through your account, and while processing times vary depending on the application, you could receive a visa as soon as a few days if there are no complications.

Australian Visa Paper Application Process:

Fill out and apply.

You can now submit your application after completing these steps. If something has changed, you can use the ImmiAccount to contact the Australian authorities. For example, if your address changes, you can use the account to notify the Department of Foreign Affairs. The process for visa application can be tracked through your account, and while processing times vary depending on the application, you could receive a visa as soon as a few days if there are no complications.

Make an appointment in an Australian Office.

Once you’ve finalized the location of the nearest embassy, you can either email them or visit them in person to schedule an appointment. You’ll need to schedule a time to come in and submit your application most of the time. You can begin preparing to apply for an Australia visa when your appointment has been confirmed.

Examine the Necessary Documents

Verifying your paperwork should be at the top of your to-do list. There is a list of required documents (passport, family certificates, insurance, visa application form, etc.) for your paper application that you must gather and attach to your application form. These documents must be exact duplicates of the originals.

You can double-check your paperwork with someone who is:

  • A citizen of Australia
  • A citizen of the country you currently live in.
  • A person who isn’t related to you (by birth, marriage, or romantic relationship).
  • A person who works in a profession recognized by the Australian government.

On one-page documents, the person who verifies your records must state that they recognize these copies of your original documents.

Complete the online application form

After that, double-check that you filled out and signed the correct Australian visa application form. The form includes written instructions on how to fill it out. Once you’ve completed the application, combine it with the other documents and submit them.

The Application Fee must be paid.

You can pay the price with an ImmiAccount. In some situations, you may be able to pay the cost on the day you submit your application. However, because the payment must be completed first, it is always a good idea to contact the Australian visa application centre in your country.

Submit Your Visa Request

All that’s left is to submit your application to the local embassy once verified your payment. Each applicant’s visa application takes a varied amount of time to process; however, keep in mind that paper applications take longer than internet applications.

If you have been given a visa, you will be notified by the Australian authorities in writing (by email or postal mail). If you apply for a visa on the internet, you may check the status of your application; if it reads “finalized,” it means your application has been completed, and you will receive a response soon. You will receive a confirmation email or a letter responding to your paper application. If the Australian Immigration Office cannot contact you, they will alert a nearby embassy or consulate. If your visa application is denied, you have 28 days to make a case for why your visa refusal should be overturned. The time limit for refusal will vary depending on the visa you applied for; your rejection letter should include all relevant information on how to appeal. Depending on your visa denial circumstances, you may be barred from receiving another visa for Australia.
